Why a coin costs more than its silver
The figures above are the value of the silver itself. A coin's price also covers minting, design, packaging and the seller's margin, so small coins can cost noticeably more per gram than a 1 kg bar. Ask for the coin's weight, purity and price per gram, and compare it with today's 999 rate of ₹218.32.
Coins with Lakshmi-Ganesha designs are the most popular Dhanteras buy. Collector and commemorative coins are priced as collectibles, well above their silver value.
Buying and checking coins and bars
- Buy from a jeweller, refiner or seller who gives a GST invoice showing weight and purity.
- Check the marks: weight, 999 or 925, and a HUID if the piece is hallmarked.
- Weigh it: a 10 g coin should weigh 10 g on the shop's scale.
- Since 16 May 2026, imports of 99.9% silver bars need a licence, so bar supply can be tighter than coins.
- Keep the sealed pack: it makes resale easier.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a 10 gram silver coin today?
The silver in a 10 g coin of 999 silver is worth ₹2,183 today, including 15% import duty and 3% GST. Branded coins sell for a little more because of minting and packaging; a 925 coin is worth ₹2,019.
What is the price of a 5 gram silver coin?
About ₹1,092 for 999 silver, before the seller's premium.
What is the price of a 1 kg silver bar today?
₹2,18,319 for 999 silver, including duty and GST. Bars carry the smallest premium over the metal value, which is why investors prefer them.
Should I buy silver coins or bars?
Bars are cheaper per gram, so they suit larger amounts. Coins are easier to gift and to sell in small parts, and are the traditional Dhanteras buy, but you pay a higher premium per gram.
Can I sell silver coins back?
Yes. Jewellers and bullion dealers buy coins back at a price based on the day's rate, after testing the purity, and usually below the selling price. Coins from well-known refiners in their original packaging are easiest to sell.
Are silver coins hallmarked?
Hallmarking of silver is voluntary in India, but hallmarked silver must carry a 6-digit HUID that you can verify in the BIS Care app. Many refiners also mark the weight and purity (999 or 925) on the coin.
