This Dhanteras vs last year
Dhanteras 2025 fell on Saturday 18 October 2025. On the last trading day before it, COMEX silver closed at about $49.86 an ounce and the rupee at ₹87.99 per dollar. Today spot silver is $59.43 and the rupee ₹96.47.
The bigger change for Indian buyers is tax. Import duty was 6% last Dhanteras; since 13 May 2026 it is 15% (10% basic customs duty and 5% AIDC). With GST unchanged at 3%, that alone makes silver about 8.5% dearer in India than the same world price would have been a year ago. How the duty works.

What to buy
- Coins (5 g to 50 g): the most popular Dhanteras buy. Low making charges, easy to gift, easy to resell if from a reputed refiner.
- Utensils and lamps: practical and traditional; ask for net silver weight and purity (often 925 or lower).
- Idols: check whether they are solid silver or silver-plated.
- Jewellery: for wearing rather than saving; making charges are highest here.
How not to overpay
- Compare the jeweller's per-gram rate with today's benchmark (₹218.32 for 999).
- Ask for making charges and any "festive offer" in writing: discounts on making charges are common.
- Buy a few days early or pre-book to avoid the Dhanteras rush; the metal price follows the market either way.
- Prefer hallmarked pieces with a HUID, and keep the GST invoice.
- Use the silver price calculator to check a bill before you pay.
