What is sterling silver (925)?
Most silver jewellery in the world is sterling silver, stamped 925. Here is what that means and how to value it.

"925" means 925 parts silver per 1,000: 92.5% silver. The remaining 7.5% is another metal, traditionally copper. The name "sterling" comes from the old English standard for silver coins.

How to price sterling silver
Metal value = weight (g) × 0.925 × today's 999 rate
A 20 g sterling bracelet contains 18.5 g of pure silver, worth about 20 × ₹201.94 at today's rate. The jeweller adds making charges and 3% GST on them. Use the silver price calculator to work out a full bill.
Looking after sterling
- Store pieces in airtight bags or anti-tarnish pouches.
- Put jewellery on after perfume and lotions, and take it off to swim or clean.
- Clean gently with a silver polishing cloth; avoid harsh abrasives on plated or oxidised designs.

Is sterling silver real silver?
Yes. It is 92.5% silver by weight. The small amount of other metal makes it harder and more durable than pure silver.
Why is my 925 silver turning black?
Silver reacts with sulphur in the air, sweat and some foods to form a dark layer of silver sulphide (tarnish). Copper in sterling speeds it up. Polishing or a mild cleaning solution removes it.
Is 925 silver good for investment?
Not really: jewellery carries making charges you don't get back when you sell. For investment, 999 bars, coins or silver ETFs are more efficient.
